The potential exists for a “significant tornado event” Friday and Friday night in the lower Mississippi Valley, including Louisiana, according to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. The SPC has placed all or parts of 10 states — stretching from east Texas to northwest Georgia and as far north as the Missouri boot heel and Kentucky — in a slight risk, but says an upgrade to a moderate risk is possible should model guidance remain consistent with the current forecast.

In its hazardous weather outlook issued earlier today, the National Weather Service’s New Orleans-Baton Rouge forecast office says “several periods of strong to severe thunderstorms can be expected Thursday through Friday night” and “a few of these may be widespread significant events,” with the possibility of tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds, continuous lightning and very heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, there is a slight risk of severe weather today and Thursday as a cold front stalls over the area.
