The SEC will become a 12-team basketball league starting this fall. Conference officials have decided to scrap the football-based two-division, six-team, east-west split. This year teams will continue to play a 16-game schedule in the same format it has been for several years, with teams from the old divisions playing each other twice and just having one game against schools from opposing divisions. But there is talk about an 18-game schedule for the 2013-2014 season. Kentucky coach John Calipari told ESPN the hope is that by eliminating divisions, the conference can get more teams in the NCAA Tournament.
