An area of low pressure that Wednesday passed to the east of Cape Hatteras has become the first tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center. At 10 a.m., the depression was located 310 miles south of Providence, R.I., and 635 miles southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The depression, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, was moving northeast near 17 mph and was not expected to threaten any land areas. The National Hurricane Center said the depression could become a tropical storm later today or Friday, but was expected to weaken or dissipate over colder waters by Saturday. The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins Monday.
