First in Louisiana: FMOL Health | Our Lady of the Lake is the first healthcare organization in Louisiana to administer Papzimeos, the first FDA-approved therapy specifically for adults with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, a rare condition that causes recurring growths in the respiratory tract. Two patients received their first injections Sept. 17, expanding access to the specialized treatment in Louisiana. The therapy targets HPV-infected cells and could reduce the need for repeated surgeries, with clinical trials finding that 51% of patients achieved a complete response.

Aluminum diplomacy: Venezuela is negotiating a second aluminum shipment to the U.S. as the two countries work to restore commercial ties following years of economic and diplomatic disruptions. Mercuria Energy Group and Heeney Capital are in talks with Venezuelan officials on a shipment similar to the 15,000-metric-ton cargo that arrived in New Orleans in September, with another delivery expected by year-end. The potential deal highlights the Trump administration’s effort to strengthen critical mineral supply chains while also raising questions about its support for Venezuelan imports amid tariffs designed to protect U.S. aluminum producers. US hiring picks up: U.S. job openings increased to 7.5 million in September, up from 7.19 million in August, as hiring picked up and layoffs declined. Openings rose most in professional and business services, manufacturing, shipping and state and local government, suggesting some improvement in labor demand after nearly three years of sluggish hiring. However, persistent inflation and higher operating costs could limit further hiring growth, even as layoffs fell to their lowest level since March 2025. The Associated Press has the full story.
