Reining in agents: Nvidia unveiled a new open-source security platform designed to set boundaries for AI agents and prevent them from taking unauthorized actions as concerns grow over autonomous systems going rogue. Its OpenShell software governs what agents are allowed to do, while a separate security layer called Sentry monitors activity and can quarantine suspicious agents within milliseconds. Nvidia says more than 100 organizations, including Microsoft, Perplexity, Accenture and JPMorgan Chase, are using the platform. The Associated Press has the full story.
New concerns: The USDA has detected its first wild screwworm fly in the U.S. since the parasite reached livestock nearly four months ago, with the fly found Friday in a trap in Brewster County, Texas. The discovery raises concerns about continued spread, although only 50 U.S. cases have been reported since June and just two active cases remain, both involving horses. The USDA is using traps and releasing sterile male flies to contain the pest, but full eradication may not occur until at least 2027 when a planned Texas sterile-fly facility is expected to open. Focus on affordability: Americans are expected to spend a record $13.5 billion on Halloween in 2026, up from $13.1 billion last year, with 74% of consumers planning to celebrate. Despite strong spending, shoppers remain focused on affordability, with nearly half starting their shopping by September, while discount stores and promotions are popular ways to stretch budgets. Costumes are projected to lead spending at $4.4 billion, followed by decorations and candy. Inc. has the full story.
