Branching into Louisiana: The competition is rising in Louisiana’s retail banking market. Bank of America is expanding its physical banking network, opening eight locations in Greater New Orleans beginning in 2027, along with 10 centers in Alabama and its first financial centers in Wisconsin. The expansion reflects the bank’s strategy of combining digital banking with in-person financial guidance, as more than 95% of client interactions occur digitally but customers continue to seek specialists for complex needs. Since 2016, the bank has invested more than $5 billion in opening and modernizing financial centers nationwide, with plans to open nearly 50 locations annually.
Energy unchecked: A new Environmental Integrity Project report identified 193 proposed or under-construction U.S. pipeline projects as of Aug. 1, representing plans for 17,000 miles of new pipelines amid the Trump administration’s rollback of environmental and safety regulations. Of those projects, 81 would cross more than 19,000 acres of federally protected wetlands, while 52 have requested or received expedited federal reviews. In Louisiana, much of the pipeline expansion is intended to support Gulf Coast liquefied natural gas exports, including the 71-mile Driftwood Line 200 and 300 project, as the report also found federal pipeline enforcement actions fell to a record low of 112 last year. A resilient workforce: U.S. initial jobless claims fell to 194,000 last week, the lowest level since mid-July, while the four-week average declined to 196,750, signaling that layoffs remain historically low. Employers have added an average of 68,000 jobs monthly so far this year, up from an average of 9,700 per month in 2025, despite continued caution around hiring. Resilient consumer spending and increased investment in artificial intelligence are supporting economic growth, with October’s job report expected Nov. 6 to show 55,000 jobs added.
