Chas Roemer says he will run for a second term on the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Roemer, a Republican, held off until today on committing publicly to run again for the Capital Region seat. But he says the reforms that have been enacted since he was elected to BESE in 2007 are not enough. Roemer says he will continue to push for an abolition of teacher tenure and to promote efforts to make Louisiana the leading state for the use of technology in education, along with a thorough reorganization of the state Department of Education. He says the department needs “to be leaner and more responsive and push as many resources out of the hallways of the Claiborne building and into the classroom as possible.” Roemer already has one challenger. Donald Songy, a Democrat who served as Ascension Parish School superintendent from 2006 to 2010, announced last week he will also run for the region’s BESE seat. The primary election is set for Oct. 22.
