Consultants are telling the board overseeing development of a medical complex in New Orleans that their projections show the facility will only need 330 to 400 beds by 2020—fewer than the 424 beds currently planned for the $1.2 billion facility. The report by Kaufmann Hall & Associates, discussed at a board meeting today, is the latest chapter in the debate over whether current plans for the facility should be scaled back. Supporters of the current 424-bed plan say it is needed to draw students and professionals and to compete with facilities around the South. The new facility is envisioned as a permanent replacement for LSU’s Charity Hospital, closed since Hurricane Katrina. It’s also being touted as a major economic development project for New Orleans.
