East Baton Rouge Parish School Board President Barbara Freiberg says a reopened Lee High School may host magnet programs and perhaps serve almost as a second Baton Rouge Magnet High School. While the idea is only at the discussion phase at this point, Freiberg says new Superintendent Bernard Taylor hopes to take Lee in that direction. She says the model might be similar to McKinley High School, where some students follow a traditional path while others pursue a more academically challenging curriculum. The school might offer a rigorous “international baccalaureate” program, although that option likely would depend on landing grant money, Freiberg says. For the past two years, Lee High has been the temporary home for Baton Rouge Magnet as the latter school has been renovated and expanded. —David Jacobs
