Mike Reitz has been named president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana effective today. Reitz, who had been the company’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer since 2000, has served as interim president and CEO since August when former CEO Gery Barry left BCBS. Reitz filled the interim position nearly a year in 2004.
“I’m acutely aware of the challenges that our state’s residents are facing in the current national economic downturn,” Reitz says. “Even before this crisis, the cost of health insurance was a burden for too many people. We must address the root of this problem: the rising cost of healthcare itself.”
BCBS Board Chairman Brent McCoy called Reitz a “seasoned business leader” with 30 years of experience in the industry. The board conducted a nationwide search for the position. According to McCoy, “We are confident that Mike’s outstanding skills and his familiarity with the company make him the right choice for continuing Blue Cross’ strength and success in this competitive Louisiana healthcare market.”
