Exide Technologies says it will temporarily shut down its Baton Rouge battery recycling facility, a move that will put about 132 employees out of work. The Georgia-based company says it will ramp down operations beginning April 1in response to the national recession and a drop in demand for lead-acid batteries. By stopping operations, Exide says it will rebalance the supply of recycled materials with demand. The company would not give a date for when it expects recycling operations to resume. Exide has an office on Industriplex Boulevard and a smelter in the northern part of the parish. The temporary layoffs are not expected to affect the office.
