The Baton Rouge Community College-Westside Campus is to be realigned with River Parishes Community College, according to a new plan the Louisiana Community and Technical College System is hoping will generate $10 million more each year through 2019.
The Town Talk reports the system’s board of supervisors unanimously approved on Wednesday a “strategic sustainability and growth plan” that would realign eight of its campus.
The board’s approval comes with recommendations to improve financial stability by realigning operations at the campuses, investing in people and technology, and implementing additional financial monitoring tools.
“In the last fiscal year, LCTCS colleges expended approximately $10 million in cash reserves to simply maintain existing operations,” the plan says. “While the final result of these recommendations is undeterminable at this time, it is estimated that the total fiscal impact in savings and new revenue to the college budgets should rectify the current structural deficit.”
In January, the board requested the system’s leadership conduct a comprehensive review of LCTCS operations to determine long-term sustainability. There was no directive from outside of the system, LCTCS President Monty Sullivan says.
Chairman Tim Hardy says the board wanted to be proactive and not wait until the situation was too dire.
