Five statewide elected officials were the first to sign up for re-election as qualifying for the Oct. 22 primary opened. Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne, Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Attorney General Buddy Caldwell, Treasurer John Kennedy and Agricultural Commissioner Mike Strain, all Republicans, paid their filing fees this morning and filled out their paperwork. Also among the earliest candidates to qualify were two little-known candidates challenging GOP Gov. Bobby Jindal: Ron Ceasar, who unsuccessfully tried to recall Jindal, and Bob Lang, who made a failed bid for U.S. Senate three years ago. Both men aren’t registered with a political party. They say Jindal has been a disappointing governor. Jindal is expected to show up later today to sign up for his race. No well-financed opponents have announced they will run against the governor. Qualifying continues until Thursday.
