Last week, the Legislative Auditor’s Office issued a report regarding the privatization of the Office of Group Benefits. Business Report Publisher Rolfe McCollister questions the report and its presumptions and makes a case for privatization of OGB, comparing Louisiana to other states. “The fact is, if you polled citizens, most don’t believe government and government workers have any motivation to ‘provide a service’ at the lowest possible costs in order to save taxpayers money, which would be essentially ‘a profit’ to all of us, the public ‘shareholders.’ Since those workers don’t share in that savings, they are not motivated to create them. That’s human nature, and with a civil service system that makes it difficult to remove those who aren’t ‘motivated,’ you get inefficient and costly operations in government—which taxpayers pay for,” he says.
