Louisiana’s utility regulators have thrown their support behind a national proposal for AT&T to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion. The Public Service Commission voted 4-1 today not to oppose the merger idea, which is awaiting federal consideration. The merger would give AT&T 43% of Louisiana’s wireless market. The only PSC member to oppose the merger backing is Foster Campbell, who says he wanted more information about how the merger could affect cell phone plan prices and rural areas where cell phone access is limited. It is unclear what PSC opposition to the merger would have meant practically, as the decision rests with the FCC and the U.S. Department of Justice. AT&T officials say 45 states didn’t even review the merger to weigh in with their opinions.
