The 2009 LSU football season might not kick off for more than 16 weeks, but the preseason forecasts are starting to come out. Sports Illustrated has the Tigers ranked 13th in the first poll it released after spring practice. The magazine says the key for the Tigers will be how well the defensive line does under new defensive coordinator John Chavis. SI says if the line can produce, the Tigers will contend for the SEC West title. Athlon Sports has LSU ranked 17th in its preseason poll. The publication put several Tigers on its preseason All-American and All-SEC teams, including offensive lineman Ciron Black, who made first team All-American and All-SEC, and running back Charles Scott, who made first-team All-SEC. Wide receiver Brandon LaFell, defensive lineman Rahim Alem, cornerback Patrick Peterson and safety Chad Jones were named second-team All-SEC; while tight end Richard Dickson, offensive lineman Lyle Hitt and punt returner Trindon Holliday were on the All-SEC third team.
