Poll: Were you surprised by the increased number of ‘academically unacceptable’ schools?

Eight more public schools in East Baton Rouge Parish have been designated as “academically unacceptable” under the state accountability program. The new additions are Belaire High, Broadmoor Middle, Melrose Elementary, East Baton Rouge Laboratory Academy, Capitol Elementary and Inspire Charter Academy in the East Baton Rouge School System and Baker Heights Elementary and Baker Middle in the Baker City Schools. Capitol Middle moved off of the “unacceptable” list. For 2011, the minimum score needed to avoid the “academically unacceptable school” label jumped to 65, up five points from last year. Next year, it goes up again, to 75. The Louisiana Department of Education says a school with a minimum score of 65 is a school where approximately 61% of the students are performing below grade level.
