Metro Councilman Rodney “Smokie” Bourgeois wants to abolish the East Baton Rouge Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. Bourgeois says the 9-member civilian board should be shut down and the office’s director and staff should enforce liquor laws. Bourgeois, who owns the George’s restaurants in town, says some board members have become too involved in the day-to-day operations of the parish ABC. ABC board members say they serve a judicial function, by deciding what penalties should apply after the staff finds a violation.
