10/12 poll respondents think there’s no need to double the amount government officials can spend without seeking a bid. An overwhelming majority – 75% – voted against raising the limit for no-bid purchases from $20,000 to $40,000. Another 20% believe the change is needed. The remaining 5% said they don’t know. Present law requires that the purchase of any materials or supplies exceeding $20,000 in public funds be advertised and awarded to the lowest responsible bidder. But Sen. Robert Adley, a Benton Republican, proposed doubling that limit, to $40,000. Last week, the Committee on Local & Municipal Affairs amended the measure, setting the threshold at $30,000. Adley’s revised bill is now pending full Senate action. The 10/12 poll is not a scientific survey. It reflects the responses of the people who choose to participate.

This week’s question: Should the Louisiana Legislature lower the standards for non-college-bound students taking the eighth-grade LEAP test?
