A vote on a tax increment financing district to support the Hampton Inn & Suites planned for downtown is set to go before the Metro Council next month. Developers of the 137-room property want to use future revenue from the hotel/motel taxes it will pay to finance the project. Similar arrangements have been used for other hotels that have been built recently, including the Hilton Capitol Center, the Hotel Indigo, and the Renaissance Hotel now under construction on Bluebonnet Boulevard. Local hotel operators have argued against TIFs, saying they are private subsidies and are adding to the supply of hotel rooms at a time when the industry is recovering from the recession.
Today’s question: Do you support using tax increment financing for the downtown Hampton Inn & Suites?
