Congressional candidates have returned $87,800 in campaign contributions from Robert Allen Stanford, who is accused of running a multibillion Ponzi scheme. Ralph Janvey, the receiver handling the Stanford case, has posted the names of officials and how much they returned. Among the cash returned is $8,000 from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat; $27,500 from Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, a Democrat from Connecticut; and $14,000 from Richard Shelby of Alabama, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee. Janvey has urged officials to return contributions so the money can go back to Stanford investors. The Stanford Financial Group has spent $4.8 million in lobbying Washington politicians, according to the Center for Responsive Politics and Reuters.
