A coalition of Pointe Coupee high schools, the chamber of commerce, Capital Area Technical College–Jumonville Campus and the LSU AgCenter is applying for a grant to bring broadband Internet service to the parish, an effort the coalition hopes will be aided by the creation of digital media training classes at area high schools. The coalition proposes to enlist high school students to create digital content that will educate residents on the positive benefits of broadband Internet service, demonstrating how it can improve daily living, education, health and job searches. Each area high school will be provided a mini-studio, including a high-definition video camera, rolling tripod, lighting, microphones, backdrop, green screen, and desks and chairs. Once each week, student participants will travel to the technical college for instruction on video editing, audio editing, graphics, and uploading the content to a dedicated website. “Positive benefits of broadband” segments will be embedded in general interest content such as local sports highlights, coaches shows, local events and interviews with public figures. Advertising in the traditional media of newspapers, billboards and cable TV will promote the website. The program will run from June 2012 until May 2013.
