The more time you spend each day sitting down, the more your mortality rate goes up, according to a paper published by doctors at Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute. The study, published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, looked at more than 17,000 Canadian adults over a 12-year period. The risk of mortality was progressively higher, based on how much time people spent sitting down, and the effects were consistent regardless of age, sex, smoking status or body mass index. Dr. Claude Bouchard, Pennington executive director, and Dr. Timothy Church, director of preventive medicine, say the research shows that reducing the amount of sitting time is a key to optimum health.
