The Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Foundation wrapped up a two-day scientific research symposium today with the Grocery Manufacturers Association, in which Pennington researchers presented findings on obesity, diabetes and other health conditions to science officers from national and international food and beverages companies. The goal of the first-time gathering was to open the door for collaboration between the private and public sectors on the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic, which has exploded in the past 20 years. Acting U.S. Surgeon General, Rear Adm. Steven K. Galson, served as event keynote. In an earlier interview, Galson said childhood obesity needs to be attacked on multiple fronts. “We do need policy changes. We do need environmental changes,” he said. “I’d really like to see the food industry step up to the plate.” Galson added that a few strong examples demonstrate how companies can respond to public pressure and maintain profits, including the American Beverage Association’s recent move to replace sugared sodas with flavored water and diet drinks in schools. Childhood obesity has a particular vice grip on the South, said Galson. Louisiana’s rate has risen 150% in the past 10 years, according to the United Health Foundation’s America’s Health Rankings, in which the state fell from 49th to 50th in December.—Maggie Heyn Richardson
