The Pennington Biomedical Research Center has been awarded a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to increase resilience, combat readiness and optimal performance of soldiers. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, who announced the grant at Pennington today, says the three-year grant will “bridge the gap between academia and the battlefield with scientific knowledge to keep our soldiers healthy, strong and ready for action.” The project, known as Collaborative Research to Optimize Warfighter Nutrition or CROWN, will create 25 new jobs at Pennington. Dr. Jennifer Rood, who will lead CROWN, says the project will involve research in nutrition, metabolism and human physiology in an effort to discover strategies that promote resilience and readiness in combat.
