Parish sales tax collections up in July, down inside city limits

East Baton Rouge Parish sales tax collections, not including vehicles, were up 1.7% in July compared to a year ago, while year-to-date collections are 2.5% higher than in 2010, according to figures released Monday by the city-parish finance department. Collections in July were down by 0.86% inside the Baton Rouge city limits, but a 4.7% increase in the parish boosted overall numbers. Year-to-date, collections in the city are up about 2%, while the parish is up about 3%. Combined, roughly $85.5 million in sales taxes has been collected this year, compared to $83.4 million in 2010 through July. Vehicle tax collections, meanwhile, are also trending better than in 2010: Parishwide, slightly more than $6.6 million has been brought in so far this year, compared to just below $6.1 million last year—an 8.6% increase.
