After more than 68 years in business, Overpass Cleaners at 2929 Perkins Road is closing. Its last day in business is March 31. The dry cleaner, which is something of a neighborhood institution for residents of the Perkins Road Overpass area, is owned by Ronald and Joyce Mcintire.
Longtime store manager Linda Patterson says the couple made the decision to close the business earlier this year, though she could not say what specifically prompted the move. The Mcintires did not return a call seeking comment in time for publication, but Patterson—who has worked at Overpass for 30 years—says employees are taking the news pretty hard.
“It’s been rough,” she says. “But we’re moving on. You do what you gotta do.”
In recent years, the Perkins Road Overpass area has begun to undergo a transformation. Many chic, upscale boutiques and restaurants have been attracted to the neighborhood, just as some longtime retailers have closed or their owners retired.
