Lisa Cook, a governor on the Federal Reserve Board, sued President Donald Trump on Thursday over his unprecedented decision earlier this week to fire her from the nation’s central bank, CNBC reports.
Cook argues that she should be immediately reinstated because the White House had no authority to order her dismissal.
The lawsuit sets in motion a landmark legal battle that is likely to end up at the Supreme Court.
Trump said he was removing Cook specifically because of allegations that she committed mortgage fraud in connection with two residential properties that she owns, but it’s important to note that the move came after months of complaints from the president that Cook, Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other board members were not cutting interest rates fast enough.
