Dismal turnout is expected for Saturday’s runoff elections, which will determine two dozen outstanding seats in the Louisiana Legislature and decide whether Gov. Bobby Jindal gets control of the state education board and support for his pick to be education superintendent. Besides those races, several parishes and municipalities have local contests to determine coroner, assessor, parish council seats and judgeships. In some parishes, however, the only item on the ballot is a constitutional amendment to prohibit the state and municipalities from imposing real estate transfer taxes that exist in three dozen other states, a debate that hasn’t generated much attention. The Louisiana secretary of state’s office expects fewer than one in five registered voters to show up at the polls, which are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
