New Orleans-based Harvey Gulf International Marine says it has become the first U.S. vessel operator to contract for construction of vessels capable of operating exclusively on natural gas. The company announced today an agreement for Trinity Offshore to build two Dual Fuel Offshore Supply Vessels, with an option for a third. Trinity will build the vessels at its Gulfport, Miss., shipyard. In addition to being powered by cleaner-burning natural gas, the company says the vessels will achieve ENVIRO+, Green Passport Certification by the American Bureau of Shipping. The certification requires the vessels be continuously manned with a certified Environmental Officer, be constructed with certified environmentally friendly materials, and have advanced alarms for fuel tanks and containment systems. Along with Harvey Gulf’s other vessels under construction, the Duel Fuel vessels will be the first offshore supply vessels to achieve this certification, making them the most environment-friendly among those operating in the Gulf of Mexico. Founded in 1955, Harvey Gulf International Marine is a marine transportation company specializing in towing drilling rigs and providing offshore supply and multipurpose support vessels for deepwater operations in the Gulf of Mexico.
