Do your duty: If you still need to register to vote for the presidential primary next month or you want to change parties, Wednesday is the deadline. Registered Democrats and Republicans will vote on March 24 for the candidate whom they want to get their party’s nomination. Only people registered in a party may vote in that party’s primary. Early voting runs from Saturday, March 10, through Saturday, March 17. Voters also will elect candidates for the Republican and Democratic state and local governing bodies. Local millage and bond issues are on ballots in 16 parishes. The East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters has four offices at which you can register. Offices in Baton Rouge are at 222 St. Louis St., room 201 of the Governmental Building; 3851 Essen Lane, inside the State Archives Building; and 10500 Coursey Blvd., room 203. The Baker office is inside the Motor Vehicles Building at 2250 Main St.
Don’t try this at home: Under the right—though easily arranged—circumstances, a simple paper clip could allow someone to circumvent your iPhone’s passcode and access your voicemail, contacts, recent call list, and other data, MSNBC reports. The security flaw was first discovered by members of the iPhoneIslam team, a group known for occasionally figuring out sneaky ways to circumvent Apple’s security measures. The group posted a YouTube video to show how the flaw can be exploited. In order to take advantage of the security flaw, a sneaky individual would need to have a paper clip and physical access to your device—which would have to be running iOS 5. There would also have to be a missed call notification visible on your home screen. Read the full story here.
For a fleeting moment: The Dow Jones industrial average crossed 13,000 today for the first time since May 2008, when the Lehman Brothers investment bank was solvent, unemployment a healthy 5.4%, and the worst of the Great Recession months ahead. The milestone came about two hours into the trading day. The stock market got the final push from strong corporate earnings reports and the passage of a Greek bailout deal intended to prevent the next financial crisis. The average was above 13,000 for about 30 seconds before dropping back. It reclaimed the mark just after noon and again just after 1:30 p.m., then lost all its gains for the day.
