Job creation: CSRA, a Falls Church, Virginia-based company that provides technology services to the federal government, is opening a support center in Bossier City’s Capital One Building, where 300 people will eventually work, The Associated Press reports. The company plans to initially hire 150 people, and add an additional 150 by the middle of next year. The company says the jobs will pay on average $22,000 a year and include a health-care benefits package. The company will also open a Integrated Technology Center in Bossier City’s National Cyber Research Park later this year, creating 800 new jobs. Louisiana Economic Development has more details.
Available money: The Louisiana Department of Education is making millions of dollars in grants available to struggling public and charter schools. The Advertiser reports that more than $17.5 million in School Improvement Grants and more than $8 million in Charter Schools Program grants are available to schools. School Improvement Grants can be used for restructuring low-performing schools in partnership with support organizations; investing in staff personnel and retention, and implementing new visions or school models. The $8 million for charter schools will be used to support the launch of 30 new charter schools over a three-year period, and fund existing high-quality charter schools and training districts who want to authorize charter schools. New opportunity: ExxonMobil and Hess have confirmed the largest oil discovery in two years off the coast of Guyana, in a field that could cost as much as $18 billion to develop, Fuelfix.com reports. The deep-water Liza field, more than 100 miles from the small South American country, could hold as much as 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent, making it one of a handful of billion-barrel discoveries in the last half-decade. Exxon first found oil in the Liza field in 2015, when it drilled its first well there, but a second well found the potential for twice as much crude. It’s a big score for an industry that has made sharp cutbacks in oil exploration and last year found less energy than any year since 1952. Read the full story.
