Allies for miners’ families: Until Saturday night, at least, LSU and West Virginia fans are laying rivalry aside to collaborate on a culinary fundraiser for the families of 29 coal miners killed in an explosion last year. Morgantown’s Richwood Grill is hosting a daily Bayou Brunch featuring seafood dishes prepared by chefs from both states. The profits and tips are going to a group supporting the families of the men who died at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch near Montcoal in April 2010. The brunch began Tuesday and originated with Chef Steve Herbert, who operates the Abita Springs Cafe in Abita Springs. No. 16 West Virginia meets No. 2 LSU at 7 p.m. Saturday. The game will air on WBRZ.
Australian for sold: London-based SABMiller says it has managed to win the support of the board of Foster’s Group for its takeover of the Australian brewer after increasing its offer to $10.1 billion. The deal, subject to approval by shareholders and regulators, would bring Australia’s biggest brewer within the portfolio of the world’s second-largest brewer by volume. SABMiller’s brands include Grolsch, Peroni and Miller Lite, and it already has rights to the Foster’s brand in India and the United States. Read more about the deal in The Sydney Morning Herald here.
Dark horse: Aside from hearing about their lack of experience and insignificant war chests, there hasn’t been a lot of attention paid to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s opponents in this fall’s election. One of them, Democrat Androniki “Niki Bird” Papazoglakis, is splitting her time by campaigning and preparing to graduate from LSU this winter with a master’s degree in public administration. “It’s sad that money buys elections and media coverage,” Papazoglakis tells LSU’s The Daily Reveille in a recent interview. Learn a little more about one of the lesser-known candidates in the governor’s race by reading the full article here.
