Outstanding students: Three public school students from metro Baton Rouge are among the 18 finalists statewide for Student of the Year. Logan Patrick Berthelot, of Lukeville Upper Elementary in West Baton Rouge, is a finalist for fifth-grade student of the year; Kelsey Nicole Olson, of Northwestern Middle School in Zachary, is up for eighth-grade student of the year; and David Michael Holmes, of Baton Rouge Magnet High, is a finalist for twelfth-grade student of the year. The Louisiana Department of Education says the children were selected as finalists based on criteria that measure academic achievement, leadership skills, character, and service to school and community. The finalists will meet March 3 at the Louisiana State Museum and the overall winners will be announced.

Opening up offerings: Phone company CenturyLink will start offering Verizon Wireless equipment and service plans to its residential and small business customers, the companies say. Financial terms were not disclosed. CenturyLink is in the process of acquiring rival Qwest Communications International. CenturyLink says its customers will be able to choose from Verizon Wireless’ full lineup of devices, including smartphones, regular mobile phones and tablets, as well as USB modems and other devices.
