On the run: The possible failure of a dam located on the Tangipahoa River between McComb, Miss., and the Mississippi/Louisiana state line has spurred mandatory evacuations in Tangipahoa Parish. Louisiana officials estimate that flooding caused by a dam failure would affect about 40,000 to 60,000 residents. Gov. Bobby Jindal says a controlled release of the dam has begun. Livingston Parish President Layton Ricks says there were concerns earlier today that the Tangipahoa River situation might affect his parish near Lake Maurepas. Those fears proved unfounded; however, the parish expects flooding issues and is preparing to rescue trapped residents if needed, he says.

Talking trash: Waste Management says it will resume collection routes in the Capital Region on Friday. Collections will take place in East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Livingston, Ascension, Point Coupee, West Feliciana, East Feliciana, St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes. Customers scheduled for normal service on Wednesday and Thursday, however, won’t be serviced until their next regularly scheduled collection days. Waste Management says it will not be collecting storm-related debris; local municipalities will contract with other providers for that service. Complete details are available here.

Payback: Oil giant BP says it will donate $1 million to support relief efforts related to Isaac, which lashed Louisiana and Mississippi with flooding rains and wind. BP says the donation will be made to the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army and divided equally between the two hard-hit states. In addition to making the donation, BP says it’s also providing assistance to employees and their families in the region.
