Pelican flag history: In recognition of Louisiana’s bicentennial, Moran Printing has published a history of the state flag and is donating a copy of each book—A Modern History of the Louisiana Pelican Flag, or a tale of the surprisingly difficult quest for the “Official” state flag—to all public schools and libraries in the state. Today from 1 to 2 p.m., Moran employees will be boxing and shipping out nearly 2,000 copies of the book at the company’s warehouse on Florida Boulevard.
Battle of Baton Rouge: The Battle of Baton Rouge, fought on Aug. 5, 1862, will be commemorated on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery, 422 N. 19th St. The ceremony, to be held under the cemetery’s oaks, will include a presentation by Civil War historian Richard Holloway, entitled “Henry Watkins Allen: From Brave Soldier to Louisiana Governor.”
YouTube doubles down: For Google Inc.’s YouTube it was a $150 million experiment: Seed dozens of new video “channels” on its Web service and see what works. So far, Google likes what it sees from the eight-month effort. The company says it will put in another $200 million to market the channels as it attempts to upgrade its content from simple user-generated videos and to lure more viewers and advertising. Today’s poll question: Author Glen Duncan, who has written on Louisiana’s state flag, hypothesizes that the three drops of blood on the pelican’s breast symbolizes the bird “wounding itself to feed its young, presumably to depict a state that cares for its citizens.” Agree?
