To be or not to be: Despite a Methanex Corp. quarterly report released Thursday in which company officials appeared to confirm reports that they plan to relocate a second methanol plant from Chile to Geismar, a company spokesman now tells The Times-Picayune that a final decision on a second plant relocation has not been made. A line in the company’s quarterly report refers to “the second facility that management also intends to relocate to Geismar.” Read the full story here.
Off the bench: After 20 years of service on the Louisiana Supreme Court, Chief Justice Catherine “Kitty” Kimball has formally retired. Kimball, who officially retired Thursday, became the first woman on the Supreme Court when she was elected in 1992 from the Fifth District, which covers Ascension, East and West Baton Rouge, East and West Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston and Pointe Coupee parishes. In January 2009, she became the court’s first female chief justice. Voters elected Republican appeals court Judge Jeff Hughes in a runoff last year to fill her seat—the term runs until 2018.
In the classroom: According to a new report from the Alliance for School Choice, private school choice program enrollment saw its largest expansion in history last year. The group’s School Choice Yearbook 2012-13, which has data on the nation’s 32 private school choice programs, says more than 245,000 children are participating in publicly funded private school choice programs across the nation.
