When the wind blows: Superstorm Sandy is keeping East Coast Barnes & Noble officials from traveling to Baton Rouge today to attend a planned ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new store at LSU, and officials say the event will be rescheduled at a date to be announced soon. However, other grand opening events at the bookstore will take place over the weekend, beginning today. Get all the details at the store’s website here.
Here’s my number: Samsung says it has sold more than 3 million Galaxy Note II smartphones in a little over a month after its launch, as the company vies to keep its lead over rivals during the crucial holiday quarter. The South Korean firm, which was the world’s largest maker of smartphones in the July-September quarter, said it took 37 days for the oversize smartphone to reach the sales figure. The Note II was released first in South Korea in September and in the United States and other countries the following month.
If you build it: U.S. companies boosted their orders for manufactured goods by the largest amount in 18 months in September, but companies remained cautious in ordering goods that signal plans to expand and modernize. Factory orders rose 4.8% in September compared to August, a month when orders fell 5.1%, the Commerce Department reports today. The September gain was the biggest since March 2011 and was driven by a surge in demand for commercial aircraft, a volatile category that saw orders plunge in August.
Today’s poll question: Who is going to win Saturday’s football game between No. 1 Alabama and No. 5 LSU?
