On target: In response to three deaths in East Baton Rouge Parish involving accidental shootings in January, leading officials in the parish have set a joint press conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday to “discuss the importance of gun safety,” according to Mayor Kip Holden’s office. District Attorney Hillar Moore III, Coroner Beau Clark, Sheriff Sid Gautreaux and Chief of Police Dewayne White will join Holden for the announcement, which will be made at City Hall, 222 St. Louis St.
At the helm: The man in charge of the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service has been named interim chancellor for LSU’s Alexandria campus. Paul Coreil has been with the LSU AgCenter more than 34 years: 12 as vice chancellor and extension service director. He announced in December that he plans to retire in September. Alexandria Chancellor David Manuel will leave the campus May 1 to become president of Drury University. LSU Interim President William Jenkins says Coreil will run LSU Alexandria until a permanent chancellor is named.
No quarter: Gov. Bobby Jindal won’t halt a state execution planned for next week of a DeSoto Parish man who murdered his 6-year-old stepson two decades ago. Jindal spokesman Sean Lansing says the governor sees no reason to intervene in the case. Christopher Sepulvado is scheduled to die by lethal injection on Feb. 13 for the beating and scalding death of Wesley Mercer. The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops asked Jindal, a Catholic, to stop the execution, which is planned for the Christian holy day of Ash Wednesday.
