Head of the class: Forum 35’s John W. Barton Sr. Community Leadership Development has announced its participants in the class of 2015. The group of 30 young professionals will be trained in nonprofit governance throughout the duration of the program, which will conclude with a matching session designed to facilitate introductions between program graduates and area nonprofit organizations interested in identifying candidates to serve on their boards of directors, committees and special projects. The program is a core pillar under Forum 35’s leadership initiative and enables members to develop leadership skills while promoting community involvement and volunteerism in Baton Rouge. Improving Mid City: Our Lady of Mercy Parish will unveil its master plan at a community meeting tonight from 6-7:30 p.m. at the parish activity center on Marquette Avenue off Government Street. The comprehensive master plan, which has been months in the making, focuses on the church and school campus and features community space, improved traffic flow and parking with upgraded facilities for Our Lady of Mercy School. The meeting is open to the public.
Cutting edge: Researchers at LSU Health New Orleans have been awarded a patent for a new approach to detecting and treating neuroendocrine tumors. Michael Lan, professor of pediatrics/genetics at LSU Health New Orleans, and his former LSU Health colleague, Mary Breslin, built a segment of genetic material—a construct—that can be used to both diagnose and treat the tumors, which often grow into cancers.
