Not taking a trim: Former manager of the LSU Student Union Barbershop Lawrence Cutrone tells The Daily Reveille his resignation and the shop’s subsequent Oct. 15 closure—after more than 50 years in business—weren’t as amicable as Auxiliary Services have portrayed them to be. The LSU student newspaper previously reported the closing was a result of Cutrone’s decision to pursue another career, according to Auxiliary Services Communications Coordinator Heather Gulino. However, Cutrone, a barber at LSU for 16 years, says the resignation was almost forced upon him after he refused to accept a 25% pay cut. Going green in the Red Stick: The recently-completed Sterling Burbank student apartment complex at 4194 Burbank Drive has netted Houston-based Sterling University Housing a LEED for Homes Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its green building and design. According the U.S. Green Building Council, Sterling Burbank is now the largest student housing project in the country to achieve the certification. The complex includes 235 apartments with 695 beds over five stories, with one-, two-, four- and five-bedroom floor plans for students. Along with energy- and water-efficient appliances, ecofriendly living amenities include on-site recycling, covered bicycle racks, electric car charging stations and preferred parking for fuel-efficient vehicles. Sterling University Housing is a subsidiary of The Dinerstein Companies.
The lights are much brighter there: Various locations and businesses throughout downtown Baton Rouge will host over 30 local artists, designers and purveyors of Louisiana-made goods on Thursday, Dec. 10, as part of the inaugural Holiday Shop Hop. The pop-up market has been developed by Visit Baton Rouge, Downtown Development District, Downtown Business Association and area hotels to highlight downtown businesses and encourage local holiday shopping. More than 20 businesses will participate in the event, which will last from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 10. The Capital Area Transit Authority is extending the hours of its free Capitol Park Trolley to 4:30 p.m. on the event day.
