From the bench: A federal district judge says Louisiana must let same-sex couples marry and file joint income-tax returns, and must put both parents’ names on their children’s birth certificates. U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman was among a few federal judges who had upheld a state law against gay marriage. His order today comes less than a day after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned his earlier ruling in several consolidated cases. The Associated Press has the full story.
In compliance: In a brief news release issued this afternoon, the Louisiana Department of Revenue says “the court has ordered the state to comply with the (Supreme Court) same-sex marriage ruling, and we will do so.” According to the department, “Married same-sex couples may file tax returns utilizing the married filing jointly status subject to other applicable laws, regulations and policies.” It adds that married same-sex taxpayers may amend prior state returns in accordance with other applicable laws, regulations and policies.” Access the full statement and guidance.
