Library to have a drive-up window: A groundbreaking ceremony for the Fairwood Branch library will be held Sept. 6. The $4.5 million library is set to open in fall 2012 on the site of the old Fairwood Country Club. The 15,800-square-foot library will have free Wi-Fi along with a drive-up window for book drop-offs and pickups.

U.S. gains a rig: The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by one this week to 1,975. Houston-based drilling product provider Baker Hughes Inc. reported today that 1,069 rigs were exploring for oil and 898 for natural gas. Eight were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago this week the rig count stood at 1,656. Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, New Mexico, North Dakota and Texas each rose by three from last week. Colorado, Pennsylvania and Wyoming were up two apiece. Alaska rose by one. Louisiana dropped 11, and Oklahoma was off by three. Arkansas, California and West Virginia were unchanged.
