On board: Gov. John Bel Edwards has appointed three new members to the LSU Board of Supervisors. Stephen Perry and James M. Williams, both of News Orleans, and Glenn Armentor of Lafayette will join the board. Their terms will expire on June 1, 2022. Perry, who will serve as an at-large representative, is being reappointed, while both Williams and Armentor are new appointments. Williams will serve as the representative for the 2nd Congressional District and Armentor will represent the 3rd Congressional District. “Higher education in Louisiana has faced the largest disinvestment in the country over the last eight years. These proven leaders will partner with me to make sure the state’s flagship university is equipped to educate the future leaders of our state, and I look forward to working with them,” Edwards says in a statement.
The official finding: A report has found that the Baton Rouge Zoo was not at fault in the death of a pair of giraffes earlier this year. The Associated Press reports the audit from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums was released Thursday. The zoo had asked its accrediting agency to investigate the circumstances surrounding the March deaths of a 24-year-old female giraffe and a 30-year-old female giraffe. Both animals died within hours of each other—one who was battling an illness and the other who sustained injuries after being knocked down by another giraffe in a barn stall.Inspectors reviewed staff incident reports, veterinarian records and pathology reports. The zoo also requested an investigation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture into the death of a Malayan tiger last month. Those results aren’t back yet.
Pink slips: Shell announced this week that it’s cutting an additional 2,200 jobs worldwide. Bloomberg reports the job losses for Royal Dutch Shell will total 12,500 as Europe’s biggest oil producer continues to adjust to the slump in prices. At least 5,000 jobs will be cut this year, the company says in an e-mailed statement. These reductions are in response to oil prices staying “lower for longer,” and a result of the acquisition of BG Group earlier this year, says Paul Goodfellow, Shell’s vice president for the U.K. and Ireland. Shell and BG employed about 94,600 people at the end of 2015.
