Making it right: The U.S. Department of Justice just released consultant BDO’s independent evaluation of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility. The GCCF was designated by BP to receive and process claims by individuals and businesses for costs and damages resulting from the oil spill triggered by the April 20, 2010, explosion of the Deepwater Horizon. The findings are posted here.
Freezing stem cells: LSU Associate Professor Ram Devireddy and Professor Jeff Gimble of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center have received a National Institutes of Health grant of $370,000 to pursue a novel line of research in stem cell cryopreservation. This research focuses on the investigation of new protocols and protein expression states that would help stem cell therapy products such as engineered bone implants survive the freezing process required to store and ship these products.
Building the future: The Louisiana Construction Education Foundation has awarded Louisiana Resource Center for Educators’ charter school, the Career Academy, a $51,000 gift. The grant comes just in time, LRCE says, as the school’s faculty will begin in August training 11th-grade students at the recently leased Capitol High campus skill labs.
