Best in the U.S.: Companion Animal Alliance of Baton Rouge has earned a $28,800 grant award for achieving the most pet adoptions of any animal control operator in the nation that participated in the Petco Foundation’s adoption event and celebration during the first weekend in October. During the weekend, Companion Animal Alliance adopted 88 pets. “This could not have happened without a great team of staff, volunteers, supporters and our local partner, Petco at Acadian Village,” says Beth Brewster, executive director of the Companion Animal Alliance. More than 14,000 pets found homes nationwide during the weekend, Petco Foundation says. Companion Animal Alliance is a nonprofit agency that was formed in 2011 to assume management of the Baton Rouge animal shelter.

Growing at Long Farm: Construction of the new Rouses Market at The Long Farm development on Airline Highway is officially underway, the Thibodeaux-based grocer announced this morning. The store will measure roughly 55,000 square feet and will be the first in Baton Rouge. It is expected to open next summer. The Rouses in the Juban Crossing development in Livingston Parish was the first in the Capital Region when it opened in January. Donny Rouse Jr., managing partner and real estate developer for the 55-year-old-company, says in a news release that a second Baton Rouge location is already under contract. An exact location has not been disclosed.

Core curriculum: The Dunham School announced today that it has been named an Apple Distinguished School for 2015–2017 for its use of transformational technology to extend teaching and learning beyond traditional classroom walls. This is the fifth consecutive year that Dunham has been nationally recognized by Apple, and school officials say they’re the only PK3 through 12th grade school in Louisiana receiving the designation this year. In addition, Dunham’s Director of Technology Nikole Blanchard has been selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator. She is one of only 122 educators across the nation, and the only Louisiana educator, named to the Apple Distinguished Educator Class of 2015. The Dunham School, 11111 Roy Emerson Drive, is a private, independent Christian, college-preparatory school.
