In the running: The list of candidates to be the next chancellor of South Louisiana Community College and the interim regional director of Acadiana Technical College has been narrowed to eight. The search, which is being assisted by the American Association of Community College Trustees, will now proceed to the next stage, which will include additional reviews and screenings of the applicants. The next leader for SLCC will fill the vacancy left by former chancellor Jan Brobst, who retired last December, as well as take on the anticipated opening at ATC that will arise this December when Phyllis Dupuis retires after more than 30 years of service. The eight candidates are: Timothy Beard, vice president for student development and enrollment management at Pasco-Hernando Community College in Florida; Robert Burgess, retired president and chief operating officer of EATEL Louisiana; Jimmy Cargill, president of Dawson Community College in Montana; Rodney Ellis, executive vice president at Atlanta Technical College; Natalie Harder, a vice president at Patrick Henry Community College in Virginia; Robert Miller, vice president for the Golden Triangle Campus and District Operations at East Mississippi Community College; Ronald Natale II, vice president for academic affairs at Glendale Community College in Arizona; and G. Jeremiah “Jerry” Ryan, former president at Bergen Community College in New Jersey.
Traveling: New Orleans native, Southern University alum and New Jersey Nets coach Avery Johnson is including a half dozen Baton Rouge schools in a tour of speaking engagements at schools in San Antonio, Houston, Dallas and New Orleans. Johnson’s mission is to motivate middle and high school youths to make good choices and stay in school. Johnson is a speaker with the Dallas nonprofit Just Say YES—Youth Equipped to Succeed. He will be speaking at Belaire, Glen Oaks and Scotlandville high schools Wednesday; and at Park Forest Middle School, CSAL Middle School and Madison Prep Academy on Thursday.
Lining it up: To celebrate the grand opening of its new restaurant at 3023 College Drive, Chick-fil-A is giving away a year’s supply of meals to the first 100 adults in line when the doors open on Thursday, Nov. 17. Chick-fil-A will give out 52 meal certificates to each of the first 100 adults in line, age 18 and older with identification. The line officially opens at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, with the free meal cards to be awarded the following day around 6 a.m. The restaurant will open for business immediately thereafter.
