Takeoff: Baton Rouge has received a $340,000 grant from the federal Department of Transportation to improve its airline service. The agency says the grant will be used to provide a revenue guarantee to add service between Baton Rouge and Washington, D.C. Public or private sector partners are required to provide an additional $68,000. The department says Baton Rouge is one of 29 cities receiving a total of $15 million from a program designed to help smaller airports improve air service needs.
Purple, gold and pink: LSU Student Government is sponsoring the first-ever “Pink Game” at LSU to support breast cancer awareness when the Tigers take on the University of Kentucky Wildcats at 11:20 a.m. Saturday. Students will be operating “Quarters 4 Change,” collecting money at the student gate of Tiger Stadium to benefit Foundation 56, a breast cancer outreach program dedicated to providing access to quality services and resources for breast cancer patients and survivors. As Saturday kicks off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the student government is encouraging fans to wear pink to the game. Inside Tiger Stadium, fans will notice pink ribbons on the LSU football players’ helmets and pink flags being carried by the LSU Colorguard.
Stormy weather: The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for southeast Louisiana, including all parishes in the Capital Region, until 8 p.m. today. Hail to 1˝ inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph and dangerous lightning are possible in the watch area.
