Connecting talent: The Baton Rouge Area Chamber today launched the Baton Rouge Area Intern Network, or BRAIN, which is to assist Capital Region businesses in connecting with local college students by increasing internship opportunities and exposure that companies, especially small and midsize ones, have with students. BRAIN is a component of the talent-retention portion of BRAC’s recently launched talent development program. Companies with open internships are encouraged to post them on BRAC’s BRAIN website here, where additional details about the program can also be found. The program has been built in collaboration with LSU and Southern University.

Going strong: Patrick Sutton, a member of the LSU cheerleading squad, broke an American collegiate record at the USA Power Lifting Collegiate National Championship in Baton Rouge by squatting 804 pounds in the 220 weight class—assisting him to an overall third-place win in his weight division. Sutton’s record aided the LSU men’s team in a first-place finish over Louisiana Tech. LSU’s Malcolm Richards also broke a record by completing a 765 pound deadlift. Sutton and his teammates credit part of their success to their coach, Mike Godawa, who received the Coach of the Year award at the event. Following his third place victory, Sutton will compete in the National Championships in Orlando, Fla.

Piling on praise: In a column featured on the CNN website today, contributing columnist David Frum says Gov. Bobby Jindal is the GOP’s best choice for a vice president running mate alongside presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. “Jindal is a doozy: a brilliant policy mind with an inspirational life story who has run an effective government in corruption-tainted Louisiana,” Frum writes. “He can talk data with Romney and credibly sit at the kitchen tables of the struggling middle class.” Read the full column here.
