Shine a light: A trio of Capital Region-based businesses are among the four being honored with a 2015 Douglas Manship Sr. Torch Award for Ethics in Business by the Better Business Bureau of South Central Louisiana. Citizens Bank & Trust of Plaquemine/Baton Rouge is receiving the award for those with 11 to 99 employees, Pelican State Credit Union is being recognized among companies with 100 to 299 employees, and Turner Industries is the award winner for companies with 300 or more employees. Also being recognized is Daigle’s Jewelry in Amite City in the category for companies with one to 10 employees. All winners will be honored at a banquet on Oct. 20 at L’Auberge Casino & Hotel.
Hard times: Hercules Offshore says it will lay off Gulf of Mexico offshore employees including some in Port Fourchon later this year amid low oil prices that haven’t shown any signs of increasing. The Courier reports the Houston-based company, which has an office in Houma, has informed state officials it plans to lay off about 50 employees based out of the company’s docks in Fourchon and Cameron will eliminated on or around Nov. 21. Cuts are expected to be permanent and there will be no bumping rights, meaning senior employees will not be able to take jobs that were held by junior employees. Read the full story.
Dangerous work: A total of 120 Louisiana workers died on the job in 2014, according to a preliminary count by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in its Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries released this morning by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. Industries reporting the most fatalities in 2014 were trade, transportation and utilities with 37, followed by natural resources and mining with 23, construction with 19, government with 12, professional and business services with seven and manufacturing with seven. The government sector includes five local government employees who died as a result of transportation accidents and the professional and business services sector includes landscaping and building services workers who died as a result of a slip, trip or fall.
